Inclusion

When we talk about exclusion, we imagine broad range of conditions in which a person can be treated as “odd” for some particular social group, thus they are deprived of basic privileges inherent to all members of the group. But inclusion is associated with only one type of social discrimination and it refers to people with disabilities. It can be defined as treating disabled people as fully-fledged members of society and recognition of their imperfections not as defects, but as individual peculiarities which, nevertheless, cannot diminish human dignity.

If we treat all people as equals, inclusion shall be maintained on every level of social organization. First of all, public places such as schools, hospitals, supermarkets, shopping malls, cinemas must be equipped with lifts and tracks for disabled people. Frequently, none of us realizes how many people with special needs live around us as we cannot see them in public. And disabled people, in their turn, frequently complain that they have just no possible way to buy basic needs themselves as supermarkets are not supposed to be visited by such people. Second of all, social groups shall be more open for people with special needs who want to join public organizations, societies, or clubs. Social interaction is of an utmost importance for them as disabilities usually limit one’s social environment to few close relatives. And last but not least, individuals must review their personal attitudes towards disabled people. Ignoring and pretending they do not exist is not a sound way of thinking for a mature person; thus we should not regard disabled people as flawed part of society as it is not true.
