Cross-cultural behavior essay sample

Organizational behavior is all about relationships. Every organization is made of people, their ambitions, and efforts. The result of their cooperation depends on similarities and differences in workers’ behavior. As a part of their organization, people modify it with their culture, behavior, traditions. Cross-cultural organizational behavior shows how culture is related to cognition, emotions, team performance, building leadership and organizational structure. These processes differ across cultures, and we cannot expect different people to react in the same way to what they experience in the workplace.

We usually study behavioral differences between collectivistic and individualistic cultures. The Western philosophy promotes individualism, development, setting goals, and achieving them. The personality stays in the center, and everything is arranged in order to cater the individual needs. Collectivistic cultures view the world differently. They cherish individual learning and collective efforts. People of Eastern cultures see themselves as a part of the group (family, team etc.) and feel obliged to work within and contribute to that group.

Factors of influence in the workplace are universal for everyone. All people need motivation, reward, and recognition to experience job satisfaction. But these influences shall be presented differently to different cultures. Personal feedback works better for individualistic cultures, while group feedback is more appropriate for collectivistic cultures. Western individuals prefer self-control and would like to make their decisions for themselves. For Asian people, extrinsic control, motivation, and decision-making is more common. Exploration and strive for diversity is more characteristic to Anglo Americans while Asian Americans prefer conformity in their team. Learning seems to be a universal value in the East and West. However, Confucian philosophy made it more tightly interrelated with performance. That is why motivation strongly depends on the culture of individuals.
