The novel Snow, Glass, Apples is a vivid example of postmodern fairy-tale originated from a story for children collected and presented for the first time by Grimm brothers. Despite a striking resemblance to the original plot, Snow, Glass, Apples is constructed upon the principle of modification which involves merging genres of the fairy-tale and horror achieved by the wide use of stylistic devices and figures of speech uncharacteristic to the fairy-tale genre. Skillful play with motives of old tales and legends allowed Neil Gaiman to create an owe inspiring vampire novel based on one of the most popular bedtime stories ever.

The narration of Snow, Glass, Apples goes from Snow White’s step-mother who used to be Evil Queen in Grimm’s tale. But in this story she interchanged roles with her stepdaughter and acts as a victim. The line of horror starts as the Queen recognizes that the princess in not an innocent girl from the ancient story any more – in this tale Snow White is a vampire. The whole plot emphasizes interpersonal relations of these two main characters which adds a hint of psychological thriller to the story. Unpredictable swings of plots and shocking details make this novel not childish at all. The very climax of Snow, Glass, Apples differs drastically from that of the original story, nevertheless, it will not leave readers indifferent.
